SecondUpdate.com – Director Yeon Sang Ho returns with his latest work in the zombie genre titled Colony.
This film marks his newest project after successfully creating several similar-themed films such as Train to Busan, Peninsula, and Seoul Station.
In his statement, Yeon Sang Ho explained that the zombie genre is not merely entertainment, but also a way to portray the fears felt by society. He believes that stories about outbreaks and destruction can reflect social conditions at a certain time.
While Train to Busan depicted the sudden panic during the early stages of an outbreak, Colony offers a different perspective. The film focuses on the fear of living in a world that has completely changed after the outbreak has lasted for a long time.
In terms of storyline, Colony is set in a sealed building that serves as a refuge for survivors of an ever-evolving zombie outbreak. They must face a mysterious infection that becomes increasingly difficult to control.
This concept differs from Train to Busan, which focused more on the initial phase of the outbreak.
The success of Train to Busan is indeed unforgettable. The film became one of South Korea’s highest-grossing zombie movies and gained global attention, partly thanks to the performance of Gong Yoo as the lead actor.
For Colony, Yeon Sang Ho brings together a lineup of top stars. The film will feature Jun Ji Hyun, Koo Kyo Hwan, Ji Chang Wook, Shin Hyun Bin, Kim Shin Rok, and Go Soo.
The presence of Jun Ji Hyun is particularly noteworthy, as it marks her return to the big screen after about a decade. Her last film appearance was in Assassination.
Yeon Sang Ho also praised his cast, stating that Jun Ji Hyun delivers a strong and emotional performance. Meanwhile, Ji Chang Wook is recognized for his dedication, especially in action scenes.
In the film, Koo Kyo Hwan plays a biology professor, while Shin Hyun Bin portrays a biotechnology professor who tries to uncover the cause of the terror originating from outside the building.
With a more complex storyline and a tense atmosphere, Colony promises to deliver high-level suspense while remaining accessible to general audiences. The film is scheduled to premiere in May 2026 in South Korea.
