SecondUpdate.com – Sony Pictures is reportedly preparing a new film project from the iconic action franchise Charlie's Angels. The news first surfaced through a report by The Hollywood Reporter, which stated that the project is still in its early stages of development.
The studio is said to be aiming to revive the legendary trio of female detectives that once gained massive popularity on the big screen. To write the screenplay, Sony has tapped Pete Chiarelli, who is known for his work on successful films such as Crazy Rich Asians, Now You See Me 2, and The Proposal.
Although the screenwriter has been revealed, there is still no official information about who will serve as the film’s producer. However, a source mentioned that Drew Barrymore and her production company, Flower Films, could potentially be involved in the project.
So far, Sony Pictures has not issued an official statement regarding the report. Other details, including the storyline, cast, and production schedule, are still being kept under wraps. Nevertheless, the move highlights the studio’s commitment to reviving one of the most recognizable action franchises in the entertainment world.
Charlie's Angels originally debuted as a crime drama television series that aired on the ABC network from 1976 to 1981. The show propelled Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith to fame as a trio of female detectives working for Charlie Townsend’s agency.
The franchise later achieved major success on the big screen when Columbia Pictures released the film Charlie's Angels in 2000. The movie starred Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu, and grossed hundreds of millions of dollars at the global box office.
Three years later, the sequel Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle hit theaters, further cementing the franchise’s place in early 2000s pop culture.
The franchise was briefly revived as a television series in 2011. Sony later released a new film version in 2019 starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. However, that installment received a less favorable response from some audiences.
As a result, the development of a new Charlie’s Angels film has sparked fresh hope among fans. Many are eager to see how the story of the iconic trio of female agents will be reimagined with a modern approach while still preserving the action and style that have defined the franchise for decades.
