Secondupdate.com – Renowned Hollywood actor Tom Cruise has teased some of his upcoming film projects.
In an interview with Today Show Australia, Cruise revealed that he and his team are currently discussing the possibility of making sequels to two of his classic films: Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and Days of Thunder (1990).
“Yes, we are thinking about and discussing many different stories, what we can do and what’s possible,” Cruise said.
Top Gun: Maverick, which was released in May 2022, was a massive success, grossing $1.49 billion worldwide.
Meanwhile, Days of Thunder, which premiered in 1990, four years after the original Top Gun, earned $157 million globally (not adjusted for inflation).
Rumors about Cruise returning to star in Days of Thunder 2 have been circulating since November 2024. Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of Top Gun: Maverick, is also reportedly involved in the sequel.
For context, Days of Thunder tells the story of Cole Trickle (played by Cruise), a race car driver recruited to a NASCAR team by a legendary crew chief named Harry Hogge (played by Robert Duvall).
According to a Variety report from January 2024, Top Gun 3 is currently in development at Paramount Studios. Ehren Kruger, who wrote the screenplay for Maverick, has been brought back, and director Joseph Kosinski is also expected to return for the third installment.
Cruise mentioned that he is currently busy juggling multiple film projects.
“It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so with everything we’re working on, we’re having discussions about Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick,” he added.
In addition, Cruise confirmed that he has just finished filming a new movie with director Alejandro Inarritu (best known for The Revenant). This untitled film began production in the UK in November 2024.
The cast includes several prominent actors, such as Sandra Huller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, and Sophie Wilde.
