Secondupdate.com – Disney’s latest film, Snow White, successfully earned $16 million, or approximately Rp264 billion, on its first day of release, including from preview screenings.
The film is playing in 4,200 locations and is projected to reach over $45 million (Rp742 billion) by the end of its opening weekend.
According to a report from Variety on Saturday (March 22), if this projection is met, Snow White will become the second-biggest debut film of the year, following Captain America: Brave New World, which is also produced by Disney.
Directed by Marc Webb, the film had a production budget exceeding $250 million. This is a substantial amount, meaning Snow White needs to generate significant revenue to be considered financially successful.
Several previous Disney family films have performed well at the box office. For example, Mufasa: The Lion King, which utilized digital animation, initially received negative reviews and only earned $35 million in its first week. However, it ultimately grossed over $250 million in North America and more than $700 million globally.
On the other hand, some Disney films have struggled, such as Dumbo (2019). The film debuted with $45 million but only managed to earn $114 million in the United States and $353 million worldwide. This revenue was underwhelming, especially considering Dumbo had a production budget of $170 million, significantly lower than Snow White.
For Snow White to be considered a success, it must sustain strong box office performance and attract more viewers over time, similar to what happened with Mufasa. However, the film does not have the advantage of being part of a major franchise like The Lion King.
Additionally, Snow White faces controversy and online criticism, which even led Disney to limit media access at its premiere. Despite this, audiences who have watched the film have given relatively positive feedback.
According to a CinemaScore survey, Snow White received a B+ rating, indicating that most viewers enjoyed the film despite critics' generally negative reviews.
Now, the challenge for Snow White is to maintain its momentum at the box office and prove itself as one of Disney’s success stories.
