Jang Geun Suk Makes Drama Comeback Through Hyupban, Plays a Chef Who Is Also a Gangster

SecondUpdate.com – South Korean actor Jang Geun Suk is reportedly set to return to the drama scene after being absent from television for quite some time.

This time, he has been cast as the lead in a new Korean drama titled Hyupban (literal title). The project will mark Jang Geun Suk’s latest drama appearance after about three years away from starring in television series.

According to entertainment industry sources on Tuesday (March 9), Jang Geun Suk will play the main character named Ma Han Sang. The character is described as a talented chef with an unusual background, as he is also involved in the world of gangsters.

The drama Hyupban presents a unique story that blends elements of crime with the warmth of human relationships. Ma Han Sang is portrayed as someone with extraordinary cooking skills, yet his life remains closely tied to the criminal underworld.

One day, he saves a university student who is in a dangerous situation. After the incident, Ma Han Sang ends up hiding in the student’s home to avoid threats from certain parties.

Over time, the two begin to live together in a modest and simple environment. Their relationship gradually grows closer. Moments spent sharing meals and enjoying warm dishes become a way for them to find comfort, support, and a sense of safety amid difficult circumstances.

The drama is actually adapted from a popular novel with the same title. The story was first published as a book and was previously adapted into a Japanese drama titled Otoko Meshi.

Because the novel already has its own fan base, the Korean drama adaptation has attracted significant attention from viewers even before production begins.

The casting of Jang Geun Suk as the lead has also sparked excitement among fans. In addition to being known as an experienced actor, he has previously showcased his cooking skills on various television programs.

This has led many fans to believe that the role of a chef in the drama suits him perfectly.

The drama will be directed by Lee Min Woo, a well-known figure in the Korean drama industry. He has been involved in several popular series such as Boys Over Flowers, God's Quiz Season 4, and Not Others.

Lee Min Woo’s experience in directing various drama genres has further increased anticipation for this project among K-drama fans.

Hyupban also holds special significance for Jang Geun Suk, as it will be his first project since joining the agency VAST Entertainment. His move to the agency is reportedly part of his effort to focus more on his acting career.

Previously, Jang Geun Suk last appeared on television in the series Decoy, which was released in 2023.
