SecondUpdate.com – Shelter, the latest film starring Jason Statham, once again reinforces his habit of releasing movies at the beginning of the year.

For the past three years, the British actor has consistently appeared in the first quarter, and 2026 is no exception.

Shelter is officially set to hit Indonesian cinemas on January 28, 2026, with Statham not only taking the lead role but also serving as a producer.

Previously, Statham released Working Man in March 2025 and The Beekeeper, which became a surprise hit in January 2024.

Compared to those two films, Shelter feels different. The movie is quieter, features minimal dialogue, and moves at a slower pace, yet still harbors a deadly sense of threat.

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Shelter is supported by a strong cast including Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Bryan Vigier, and Bill Nighy, the veteran actor who previously earned an Oscar nomination for Living.

Shelter opens on a bleak note: crashing waves, a gray sky, and an old, defunct lighthouse.

Nearby stands a secluded house inhabited by Michael Mason (Jason Statham) and his dog. His life unfolds in solitude, with almost no interaction with the outside world.

Occasionally, a boat docks carrying Jessie (Bodhi Rae Breathnach) and her uncle, delivering food and supplies.

However, the calm is shattered when a massive storm hits. Their boat capsizes, and while Michael manages to save Jessie, her uncle does not survive.

Michael then takes Jessie into town to buy medicine and clothes. Unbeknownst to him, a CCTV camera captures his face.

The security system immediately identifies Michael Mason as the most wanted terrorist by the British government. From that moment on, their lives change. Michael and Jessie are forced to flee.

Michael himself is confused as to why he has become a target. The answer is tied to a controversial program called Total Human Engagement Analytics, a project developed by Manafort (Bill Nighy).

The program sparked widespread opposition for allegedly violating privacy and conducting extreme surveillance on British citizens.

The situation becomes even more complicated when a man named James Workman (Bryan Vigier) appears and attempts to kill both Michael and Jessie.

A relentless chase becomes inevitable, raising a major question: what unresolved past does Michael Mason actually have?

One of the most intriguing aspects of Shelter is how it builds its atmosphere. The first 20 minutes are almost entirely without dialogue, filled with simple daily routines.

Viewers are invited to experience Michael’s isolation, accompanied only by his dog, later named Jack. The sense of cold, loneliness, and alienation is strongly conveyed.

After that, however, the story begins to move quickly. The setting shifts from the Hebrides Islands in Scotland to more crowded areas.

Tension rises sharply, conflicts emerge, and new characters enter the story, each playing a crucial role.
