SecondUpdate.com – The latest film from the Karate Kid franchise titled Karate Kid: Legends is estimated to earn up to USD 25 million (approximately IDR 407.3 billion) during its premiere.
The film leans heavily on nostalgia by bringing together two iconic characters from previous versions: Jackie Chan from the 2010 Karate Kid and Ralph Macchio from the original 1984 version.
The popularity of the Cobra Kai series on Netflix, which is a spin-off of Karate Kid, has also boosted expectations for the film’s success.
Some rival studios even predict that the film’s opening weekend revenue could reach USD 30 million (around IDR 488.8 billion) if audience response is highly enthusiastic. However, even if it only hits the conservative estimate, the result is still considered strong.
Moreover, the film was made on a modest production budget of approximately USD 45 million (IDR 733.2 billion). Karate Kid: Legends becomes the sixth installment in the Karate Kid franchise and continues the storyline from the Cobra Kai series, which aired from 2018 to 2025.
The film features a unique concept by merging the storylines from both the original and the 2010 versions into a single narrative.
Directed by Jonathan Entwistle and written by Rob Lieber, the movie introduces young actor Ben Wang as the new lead character.
Ben Wang is joined by several well-known actors including Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, and Ming-Na Wen.
This also marks the first film in the Karate Kid franchise to receive a PG-13 rating, meaning it is recommended for viewers aged 13 and above.
Produced by Columbia Pictures and distributed by Sony Pictures, the film had its premiere in Mexico City on May 8, 2025, and was officially released in theaters worldwide starting Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
